What is a carpet beater?
In most households, the modern vacuum cleaner has long since replaced the good old carpet beater. The carpet beater that housewives once used to clean carpets and upholstered furniture certainly has certain disadvantages. Because while the carpet beater was hitting the carpet or the seating furniture with full force, lots and lots of dust was thrown up. That's why the knocker couldn't simply be used in the apartment, but rather the carpet was hung over a carpet rod that was specially built for this purpose. At that time, carpets and rugs were also carefully knocked out on wall ledges or on balcony railings. This housework was certainly quite tedious. But also extremely efficient. And so the numerous advantages that a carpet beater has to offer cannot be ignored.
This and more characterizes the carpet beater.
Nostalgic people will certainly still know that the classic carpet beater of yore was primarily made of willow, rattan, wicker or other particularly flexible woods. Today, modern carpet or upholstery beaters are almost exclusively made of robust plastic. This material is comparatively light in the hand and you cannot easily slip when hitting it. The upper area of the knocker is circular and flat, with usually larger holes in the middle. This allows the swirled dust to escape more easily from the material being processed. The rod offers an additional plastic or rubber handle in its lower segment, which can be up to 30 centimeters long - depending on the model.
Why has the carpet beater gone out of fashion?
This special cleaning device has certainly not completely disappeared from the market. The knocker is still available in selected stores. What's even more interesting is that you can buy carpet beaters cheaply online. However, if you consider that just a few years ago there was at least one carpet rod behind almost every house where you could knock out the carpet that needed to be cleaned, things look completely different today. Carpet rods are only available in older properties. The search for alternatives is therefore required. The fact is that the cleaning performance of a carpet beater is significantly more profound than, for example, a vacuum cleaner can offer, so it is definitely worth using a carpet beater again. With a few courageous blows everything gets clean: dust, dirt, lint, crumbs, etc. are almost completely removed from both carpet fibers and upholstered furniture. The power of the knocker also extends into the deeper fiber levels. So even where the suction power of a normal vacuum cleaner including a carpet brush has long left something to be desired.
